Living on the West coast, with our beautiful beaches, long summer days and family trips to the beach learning the skill of swimming has become a necessity.
With classes now available for children as young as 6 months old, for most parents the main question is "whats the right age to start my child's swimming lessons.'
Although there is no 'right' age to start your child's swim journey, enrolling them into lessons from a young age does have many benefits. Some of these include:
Water safety skills:
As well as focusing on swim technique, https://www.hbfstadium.com.au/swim/kids-swimming-lessons/ actively work towards the prevention of drownings by educating students on water safety. Water safety not only teaches children how to respond to an emergency situation but also concentrates on identifying water hazards and the development of survival and rescue skills.
Social skills:
Swimming lessons provide the perfect environment for kids to meet new friends and start to develop their fundamental social skills. With weekly lessons, children will learn how to interact and co-operate with not only their peers but the swim instructor as well, being required to stop talking and direct their attention to the teacher for instructions. Developing these social skills from a young age can also assist with their transition into schooling life, where they will be surrounded by a large group of students and have to follow directions on a daily basis.
Combats a fear of water:
Enrolling into swim lessons from an early age can help reduce the risk of children developing a fear of water. In particular, parent and baby swim lessons are great for preventing this fear as children will remain calm within the water with the comfort of their parents by their side. This also ensures their first interaction with the water and learn to swim experience is a positive one, shaping their future attitude towards the water.
Commitment:
Starting children's swim lessons from a young age will work towards teaching them the importance of commitment. With lessons occurring weekly, kids will start to notice the benefits of attending class regularly when they are able to move up to the next level with their friends. Swimming lessons will also teach children about the advantages of committing to their lessons when they can join their friends for a swim outside of class.
Fun:
Swim lessons are fun! Introductory classes are filled with technique refining exercises as well as time for games with other students. The sooner children develop a confidence within the water, the sooner they can show off their new skills by splashing around at the beach or the local pool with friends.
